The Masterpieces is an ongoing series of articles on the greatest achievements in cinema from around the world. What do I think a masterpiece is? I accept each film on it's own terms, so it is hard to define a definitive criteria for what a masterpiece is. The most common quality, though, is that a masterpiece is usually very surprising in that it eludes any prior notions of criteria one may have had. Masterpieces are the films that manage to escape criticism and therefore standards themselves.
